Relocating to Gatineau

New posting? New job? New chapter? I'll help you land well.

Moving to a new city is stressful enough. Navigating a different province's real estate system shouldn't add to it. Whether you're coming from Ottawa, another province, across the country, or across the globe, I specialize in making your transition to the Outaouais smooth, informed, and stress-free.

Let's Plan Your Move

Canadian Armed Forces and RCMP

Posted to the National Capital Region? I understand IRP timelines, house hunting trips, and the unique pressures of military moves.

Federal Government Employees

Transferring to an Ottawa office? Gatineau offers significant savings. I help public servants weigh the full financial picture.

Interprovincial and Long-Distance Moves

I've helped families relocate from across the country and across the globe, including multiple sight-unseen purchases.

Military Families

Posted to the NCR? I understand what that means.

Military relocations aren't like other moves. You're on a tight timeline, often buying sight-unseen, navigating the IRP process, and trying to settle your family into a new community all at once. I get it on a personal level.

My father-in-law served in the Canadian Armed Forces for decades before recently retiring. My mother-in-law spent her career specializing in military relocations alongside the federal government.

I grew up surrounded by people who understand the realities of military life. That includes the compressed timelines, the stress on families, and the importance of getting it right.

Why families choose Gatineau over Ottawa

The Outaouais offers multiple real advantages for families relocating to the National Capital Region.

30-40% lower home prices

The average home in Gatineau is $450K-$500K versus $700K+ in Ottawa. Your dollar goes significantly further.

Subsidized daycare

Quebec's universal childcare program could save your family over $10,000 a year compared to Ontario.

Cheapest electricity in North America

Quebec hydro rates are among the lowest on the continent. Water is included in your property taxes.

Minutes from Ottawa offices

NDHQ Carling, Leitrim, Uplands, and downtown Ottawa are all a short commute from Aylmer, Hull, or Gatineau proper.

Gatineau Park at your doorstep

361 km² of trails, lakes, and nature. Skiing, hiking, swimming, and cycling right in your backyard.

Bilingual communities

The region has thriving bilingual communities. English schools and services are readily available.

★★★★★
"My partner and I made a big decision to move cross country from B.C to Quebec. We had never lived in Quebec before, and this was our first home purchase. Catherine made the experience not only enjoyable, but we felt like she really understood what we wanted and advocated for us. We bought the house without seeing it in person, but Catherine was excellent at providing detail, sending pictures and videos."

Questions about relocating to Gatineau

Is it cheaper to live in Gatineau than Ottawa?
For most families, yes. Homes are 30-40% cheaper, daycare is heavily subsidized, and electricity and water costs are significantly lower. The trade-off is higher provincial income tax, but the savings on housing and childcare usually outweigh that.
Can I buy a house in Gatineau without visiting in person?
Yes. I've helped multiple families across the country purchase homes sight-unseen. I provide detailed video walkthroughs, close-up photos of every room and potential concern, honest written assessments, and live video calls during showings so you can ask questions in real time. It's not the same as being there, but I make it as close as possible.
What's different about buying a home in Quebec versus Ontario?
Quebec uses the Civil Code (not Common Law), so the process has key differences. You work with a notary instead of a lawyer. There's a welcome tax (taxe de bienvenue) instead of Ontario's land transfer tax. Most homes are sold with a legal warranty against hidden defects. The offer process and disclosure requirements follow different rules. If you've only ever bought in Ontario, it can feel unfamiliar, but I walk every client through it step by step.
Which Gatineau neighbourhoods are closest to Ottawa offices?
Hull is the closest to downtown Ottawa and NDHQ Carling, just across the Portage or Chaudiere bridges. Aylmer is a popular choice for families who want more space and a suburban feel while still being 20-25 minutes from Parliament Hill. Gatineau offers newer developments and easy highway access. Chelsea and Wakefield are further out but offer a countryside lifestyle with Gatineau Park access. I match families with neighborhoods based on their commute, lifestyle, and budget.
Do I need to speak French to live in Gatineau?
It helps, but it's not essential, especially in Aylmer and parts of Hull where there are established English-speaking communities. English schools are available through the Western Quebec School Board. Many services, shops, and restaurants operate in both languages. Government services are available in English. That said, having some French makes daily life easier and opens up more neighborhood options. I'm fully bilingual and handle everything in your preferred language.
